A black cap for your Mac. The notch is gone.

How it works

Blackcap turns the menu bar area black so the notch of your MacBook blends in. It lives in the menu bar; the popover has one switch. Behind the scenes Blackcap uses one of two techniques and picks the right one on its own:

A black, click-through panel in the menu bar strip. It works with every wallpaper and switching it off restores everything instantly.
A copy of your wallpaper with a black bar, set as the desktop picture. macOS then draws the menu bar text in white. Blackcap remembers the original and puts it back when you switch off.

The panel is used while the menu bar text is already light; the wallpaper copy when macOS would draw dark text over a bright wallpaper, because a black panel would hide the menus in that case. Dynamic day-and-night wallpapers keep switching: every frame gets the bar.

Frequently asked questions

Blackcap says "Paused" with an aerial or animated wallpaper. macOS does not expose an image file for aerial and animated wallpapers, and in Light Mode it draws dark menu bar text over them. Covering the strip would hide your menus, so Blackcap deliberately covers nothing and says so. Pick a picture wallpaper (any photo or one of Apple's still and day-and-night wallpapers), or use Dark Mode; Blackcap resumes on its own.

The menu bar did not turn black. Open the popover and read the note under the switch. Common causes: "Reduce transparency" is on in System Settings › Accessibility › Display (the menu bar is opaque then), or Blackcap is paused because the wallpaper has no image file (see above).

My wallpaper changed to a still image. Blackcap renders every frame of a day-and-night wallpaper, so this only happens on Macs that cannot encode HEIC. The popover says so in that case.

How do I get my original wallpaper back? Switch Blackcap off. If Blackcap had changed your wallpaper, note that macOS only lets an app change the wallpaper of the space you are looking at, so visit each space once; Blackcap restores the original as you arrive and shows how many are left. Settings › Wallpaper › "Restore all originals" does the same.

I have a Mac without a notch. Blackcap turns the menu bar black anyway. On a MacBook with an external screen, "On all displays" (on by default) covers the external screen too.

The menu bar icon is gone. You switched on "Hide menu bar icon". Open Blackcap again from the Applications folder: the icon comes back for 15 seconds and the settings open.

Where are the processed files? Settings › Wallpaper › "Show in Finder". Files that are not on screen and unused for a week are removed automatically.

Something else is wrong. Settings › About › "Copy Diagnostics Report" and include the report in your message. It contains display and wallpaper details, never image contents.
